My thoughts are very basic, ( although the situation is not ) Our system was set up as one person, one vote. These people get to vote more than once. Their money buys their first vote and then they get to vote again at the polls.

Getting money out of the politics in this country will go a long way towards making things more sane and rational, and it will save billions of dollars spent needlessly that only goes to enrichen the networks and media moguls, money that could be better spent elsewhere, anywhere, on our country and its people.

But, the political parties have worn our their usefullness, as is testified by the gridlock in Congress because of direct splits down party lines.

I also think it may be time for the people who are represented to take a much more active role in holding those who represent the people accountable for their actions and inactions. I think we need a more efficient way for the people’s voices to be heard, and the media can play a large part in that.

What about holding town hall meetings throughout the country, on specific issues, such as campaign finance, or congressional procedures and earmarks, or rules regarding political appointees to high-level cabinet, agency, and other positions like the Supreme Court, and an entire town hall meeting on the role the Supreme Court should play in our lives, etc.

What I’m trying to say is let the people speak, in large numbers, often and in union, and things will happen very, very quickly. Let’s do it.

Despite those who say we must remain calm and rational, I find myself emotionally frustrated. Given the circumstance with our system ov elections and governance, our system of economics, and our inequitable laws and taxes, I would say the emotions and frustrations are not only justified but a responsibility of citizens.

I am not certain that moving to campaigns based on public funding will solve the financial problems, but it does seem as if it might solve a moral problem dealing with conflict of interest.

With that, I fully support Mr. Ratigan and this movement. I realize many in this country still disagree on fundamental directions. However, I see the concept of getting money out of politics as a good way to break the stalimate and get some movement on these issues.

    Thank you Mr. Ratigan.

I remember the first ‘gas shortage’ in ’73. I also remember the 2nd and the 3rd. It was
purposeful manipulation and showed just how fragile and sensitive the basis of our economy was. Nothing has changed since then despite every president since Nixon promising to eliminate our dependency on foreign oil. And there’s the catch. There’s no such thing as foreign oil. Oil is oil – it’s one big global market to which the whole world is addicted. So how do we drop our oil habit? Even the drill-baby-drill crowd knows there’s only a finite amount of it and it’s becoming harder and harder to find, get to, and exploit. That coupled with wild market speculation makes it more and more expensive, unstable, and unreliable. A certain blatherskite on the radio has definitively stated several times that there is enough oil in the world to last 500 years. A long time, right? But what happens then? Not that it matters to any of us or our grandchildren, but what about our nth-grandchildren? When will we start to fully deploy alternate energy? Next year? In 200 years? In 499 years? But there is a more stark and chilling question to ponder, the answer to which has far reaching implications and therefore defies mathematical certainty. In however long, what will be the cost of the last barrel of oil?

  • Jim Phillips says:

The candidates should only be taking money from the government so that the money can be controlled and we know who is giving to whom. It takes the buying favors out of politics.

The government could buy tv ads, government ads and print ads in block and save money.

Whatever the government gives them needs to be the only money they get and the money needs to last.

  • For five years I have been advocating that we petition for
publicly-funded campaigns for any elected office. Those who would run for office in the USA would have to agree to accept no money from PAC’s, Super Pacs, Unions, Lobbyists, foreign countries, corporations, departments of government, government or quasi government agencies. Nor could they use any of their own money This will create a level playing field.

Furthermore, The National Election Commission should be mandated to vet every single candidate when they are identified prior to primary elections.

Unless this is implemented or some version similar, American Citizens will never again be constituents of any
one elected. Rarely do we count. There is not anyone DEFENDING THE “COMMON GOOD.”

ALL BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT ARE TOOLS OF THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE AND CONGRESS.

WE ALL MUST BECOME INVOLVED TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

I want to get money out of politics because I can’t AFFORD it. I have a family to feed and raise and these politicians are not getting things done.

  • Joe Stainer says:

I am tired of 545 people deciding the future of this great country and its people. The 545 consist of the President, Vice-President, the cabinet members, the Supreme Court Justices, the senators, and the congressmen. All of these 545 people seem to have their own agenda relative to pacts and the rich people who support them. Their agenda does not include the common man who makes up the majority of the population. I am 71 years old and have lived a decent life….is it wrong for me to want better for my children and grandchildren?

  • Saige says:

Despite me taking the time to write letters and sign petition after petition in the interest of my fellow American, no action or receipt is ever even acknowledged.

The only time I ever get a letter it’s a mas-distributed response from our rep saying, “well hey, I didn’t listen cuz…”

Fuck that. I’m tired of wasting my personal time and effort, and my peer’s time and efforts trying to make these idiots listen, when they’re busy making lunch dates with lobbyists and their super packers.

  • Horton1 says:

I want $$$ out of politics because I CAN’T AFFORD TO BUY MY OWN POLITICIAN to support issues/causes that the 99% of America would like to have addressed……..and the 1% DON’T WANT to address.

  • Emery Tahi says:

…because the need for constant fundraising is time consuming, corruptive, hinders independent voices from emerging. We don’t want the best politicians money can
buy, we want the best politicians there are!!

I remember a time when politicians had ads on tv, participated in debates, and there was “equal time” allotted to candidates. This was before there was a Supreme Court decision allowing Corporations and other wealthy individuals and organizations to fund a candidacy. Did people back then have less freedom of speech? Does the more money you provide to a candidate, mean you should have more access to air your opinions (lies, misinformation)? What about individual citizens? Because they have no real wealth, even when combined–do they not get a voice under this ludicrous decision? How does any of this make sense for Democracy?

  • Todd says:

Our country has worked with the two parties in the past but is slowly falling into the pull of greed over time. The politicians are not making laws to avoid this tragedy because it is not concerning themselves into the lower income brackets. We need a regulatory commission to even the slate so the money won’t go one way or another but it will be better off for the people they serve. It should be set up so the commission wil not reap gain from there job either, or it will happen all over. It is healthy for 2 parties to wrestle with ideas as long as their service comes first.

  • Raj Vogga says:

Today, the goverment is not for the people, but for the corporations. We no longer can rely on the government. Corporations have billions of dollor to lobby congress to change laws in favor to them so that both politicians and greedy corporate head pins can get rich. Lobbying should be banned completely if we want any justice to the common people. Increase taxes on corporations that ship jobs to China and other countries so that they are forced to bring jobs back to America. Cut wasteful spending and create policies that will encourages new technologies and create more jobs.

  • Diana Hopson says:

With the Supreme Court decision that corporations are people and money is free speech, we are no longer a democracy WE ARE NOW A PLUTOCRACY and will plunge even farther to the right is this upcoming election goes to the Republican right. Obama may not be the ideal choice to lead this country, but he is the best choice out there, for now. If we don’t re-elect Obama and let the Senate go the way of the House we are doomed for certain.

GET MONEY OUT of politics NOW.
