Dylan, i have signed the petition and shared to many folks who have also signed. You need to bolster up the website with additional layman terms language what the amendment accomplishes. Keep up the good work!
I began this campaign last year by posting on AlterNet and the Thom Hartmann Show. I’m so glad you, Mr. Ratigan, have taken up the cause as well. I don’t care WHO gets it done, as long as it does. Here are some other suggestions for the law
1. ALL candidates for public office must take public funding. (The public already pays for corporations and special interests and lobbyists to get their way through exaggerated consumer prices and worker’s wage and benefit cuts, etc., all of which equal profits to spend on skewed elections. We may as well spend our money on fair elections.)
2. ANY CANDIDATE found taking outside money or using his or her own shall be disqualified from the election process immediately and shall suffer an immediate 5 year ban on running for ANY public office. He or she shall also be subject to criminal prosecution for bribery (consequences and replacement/reappointment policy will need to be fleshed out). Or, if he/she is found guilty after election, he/she shall be removed from office and a replacement will be assigned by the sitting mayor, governor, or House Majority leader, depending on the Constitutional rules of succession.
3. Campaigns shall begin NO SOONER THAN 6 WEEKS before the election.
4. ALL candidates shall receive the same amount of public money and shall have an equal amount of free TV/media time. ALL TV/Media must give equal time to ALL candidates or no time to any one candidate. Media that participate according to the law shall receive compensation in the order of a federal Fair Election grant. Those who do not follow the law will be charged no more or no less that one-third of its revenues for one fiscal year. Cost of the fine cannot be passed on to consumers or employees. Fines must be proved to be surrendered by stockholders or from previous years’ profits. Penalties for not paying fines accordingly will put at jeopardy broadcasting licenses and any and all public money/funding for a period of no less or no more than 3 fiscal years.
5. A NON-POLITICAL ELECTED GROUP shall check all political ads for FACTS before airing.
6. NO political ad shall slander another candidate. The content of the ad must contain content that describes the candidate’s position only and vetted facts.
7. REPEAL the recent Supreme Court case Citizen’s United. Corporations are NOT people.
8. County, state, and federal election entities will police this process, through a non-political federally funded elected group. No private business shall have involvement in any stage of the election process.
9. Eliminate the Electoral College: one person, one vote.
10. ALL citizens of the United States shall have the right to vote–even those incarcerated and those prohibited by current laws and barriers. (A way must be found to make certain every legal US citizen of voting age has a vote–one vote.)
11. Eliminate electronic voting, which is open to subversion, unless a paper trail can be established (reference number 8 above).
12. Anyone holding office (and all members of their family: parents, children, siblings, and siblings’ children) shall divest themselves of ALL corporate stock in order to hold office. [Let's turn public service back into PUBLIC (rather than self-)service.]
13. There shall be a 5 year ban on elected officials taking a paid position with a company/business/subsidiary for which that official has voted for legislation or heard cases that have favorably benefitted said company/business/subsidiary. (Punishment to candidate and company/business/subsidiary will need to fleshed out.)
14. There shall be NO gerrymandering of districts to favor one party over another.
Sincerely,
The Revolutionary Granny
I want to personally thank you for giving the ordinary citizen a voice. We need to get money out of politics so that the average persons’ voice will count as much as the monied interests. Maybe then the peoples’ voices will be heard. This is supposed to be a representative government but it seems that the only interests represented are the corporate interests.
Dylan is giving us a powerful way to be involved and get others involved, as well. Why not become part of a 5X5 campaign? Let’s each find 5 others to make a video and ask them to find 5 more, and so on, and so on…
I want the United States to be what was envisioned by our founders; a nation of liberty and justice for ALL, not just those with money and influence. I want to the opportunity to elect someone who isn’t bought and paid for by those who selfishly want to promote their own agendas. I want this country to reflect the true principles we originally espoused over 200 years ago. That is why I am supporting and promoting GetMoneyOut.
I have signed the petition and have passed it on. For far too long the vast majority of the American people felt that there was nothing that we could do. Now there is something. There is power in numbers. What would happen if everyone at the same time and date took all their money out of Bank Of America and put it in their local credit union? Wall street responds to money, maybe they will respond to a lack of it as well!
Regards,
Dan Santos

I want to Get Money Out because I want to run for public office someday, and refuse to take money from corporations. Major campaign finance reform is needed so that people who have the ideas and talents necessary for public service have an equal opportunity to be elected. The next great public servant of our time is out there somewhere. Wouldn’t it be a shame if he/she couldn’t run because they couldn’t afford to? Thanks for doing this, Mr. Ratigan, it gives me hope that someday I can fulfill my dreams and goals of being elected fairly by the people.
Money is not speech. If money were speech then most of America has no voice. If government is for the people, by the people then all people should have a voice, not just the ones with money. It is way past time for the system to change to allow all people to have an equal voice in our government. Get the money out of our elections.
We The People need to take our government back from the RICH !

What happened to a government for the people and by the people?
It has been taken over by the 1% and only we the people can change that.We all need to get together on this. Everyone has been affected and the worst thing we can do is nothing!
I am part of this movement because I believe in the United States of America and was willing to die for our country. I developed an autoimmune disease after several vaccinations in service (not deployed) and now uncertain what is going to happen to me.
Now after wasting money fixing other countries, our government decided to play around with veterans benefits, social security, medicare, and other services that they, the top 1% do not need. Corporations get huge tax breaks and bail out money yet the people get raped. This is all so they can pay off other countries, military contractors huge sums and leave the vets coming back from war hanging out to dry.
The people of the United States need to reclaim our government.

Dylan – I have felt that money was the basis of all of our problems for the last two years. I tried with a friend to find some way to start a group but backed off because we weren’t sure we could be effective. I have written Letters to the Editor in my local newspaper and talked about it to many people. There are many benefits if we can accomplish this. The most important is that our politicians will begin listening to the people that elect them not the people that buy them. They will have more time to govern since they won’t have to spend the majority of their time raising money. Also think of the possibilities for spending all of those dollars in a positive way to benefit our world instead of donating them to a political candidate. We need momentum to build a movement and I’m glad you have committed to being a voice to get us there. We all need to spread the word to all of our contacts through the internet. I think it would be helpful to have a concise document we can all use for that purpose. I’m here to do whatever possible!
This country was founded under the auspices of “We, the People…” Bankers may be people, too, but they are not “THE” People, nor are they part of us as reluctant victims of their fraudulent greed. Tea Party members and Republicans often cite Abe Lincoln, who said we were founded “…of the people, by the people and for the people.” Wall Street money put President Obama in office! We, the people, voted for him, but Wall Street money bought the Presidency. Energy money backs the Republicans, but both Bankers and big business, especially Energy (big oil,) back (buy!) both political parties “hedging” their bets the best they can.
My biggest disappointment about Obama is two-fold: There should be 1,000-5,000+ Wall Streeters and other bankers in prison for long terms with their assets having been taken from them and redistributed SSI, which the Congress has systematically fleeced us of since its inception.
As much as I praise the President’s valiant leadership toward universal health insurance, his first actions should have been about J.O.B.S., especially since he had a Democratic Congress.
My understanding is that on-line petitions are worthless. I signed it anyway, and am proud that I did, but please, Dylan, regularly speak to that topic on your show and in an email back to us all. Thanks for your good work and please keep up the good work.
Sincerely
bruce adams
I agree 100% ! The corporate money that has and continues to buy and own our government and democracy is an evil cancer that must be cut out completely if the patient (our country) is to ever heal. It is time for ALL patriots, whether Tea Party or Progressive, to come together and take our country back from the toxic tentacles of corporations and Wall Street. The spontaneous occupations and uprisings occurring all over the country are testament to the fact that this is an idea whose time has come. There is only one question to be asked now: Who do you stand with, the American People or Wall Street?

Our political needs to rid itself of lobbyists and the incessant campaigns for money to run in elections. Congress does not have the will to reform our system on its own. The people must rally and compel political reform taking the money out of politics!
Money and the acquisition of material wealth has perverted the old American Ideal of strong personal ethic and a strong community. The feeling that we are in this struggle alone must end and a new focus to grasp back the reins of power must prevail for us to obtain a strong sense of togetherness.
